Academic Life
Comentary

Q: Alvin F. Pussaint, a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School and director of the Media Center at the Judge Baker Children's Center in Boston, a longtime consultant for Cosby's various projects:

"African American girls seem to be doing much better than the boys in every way - in college, in society. Does this have to do with the way we are raising our boys, and what could we do differently?"

Reader's Digest, May 2003, p. 81
A: Bill Cosby, "in his stand-up routines, albums, books and TV shows, he's shared nearly everything with us, going back to his childhood in the Philadelphia projects, where he grew up . . ."
His response to the Professor:
"I think we need to stop making boys! [Laughs] In lower economic neighborhoods, regardless of color - white, Polish, French, whatever - the uneducated, lower economic male seems to accept the macho of being incarcerated. As if it's a manly thing to say you don't care if you go to jail. I think that until we can get a message to these males that this is not acceptable, things won't change. We have to get rid of this feeling of worthlessness, this belief that my life is not worth anything, therefore I will kill you, and it's okay if you kill me."
